Mission

The Department of Environmental Science focuses on human health and health of the environment. By research at international level and teaching based on it, we help people breath, eat, drink and live in their environment without their health being endangered.

To support this mission, the Department produces high quality scientific data, and supports business life and administration, especially in Eastern Finland.

Vision for the year 2015

The following areas of environmental sciences are important for the activities of the department:

The focus areas of research and education are:

Aerosols, fine particles and bioenergy
Biogeochemistry and climate change
Safety of drinking water
water and wastewater treatment and sanitation
Soil remediation
Noise and vibration
Indoor environment and occupational hygiene
Health risk assessment of radiation
Environmental informatics
Environmental cell biology

The Department of Environmental Science is actively collaborating with other research units in the field.
