Master's Degree Programme in General Toxicology and Environmental Health Risk Assessment (ToxEn)
Notice: Additional application period only for Finnish students, 1.3.-16.4.2010 Application form
Please, notice that the signed paper application forms must reach the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio campus by APRIL 16th 2010 at 3 p.m. GMT+2 by the latest.
Toxicology and environmental science are applied sciences which are based on basic sciences like chemistry, biology, physiology and physics. The backbone for human toxicological risk assessment and exposure assessment is the understanding of the mechanisms of toxic effects in human body and good quality toxicity testing of new chemicals. We provide an international master's degree programme where students, after common basic studies in toxicology and environmental science can specialize either in general toxicology including toxicological risk assessment or environmental health risk assessment with special emphasis on exposure assessment. The duration of the programme is two academic years and all teaching is given in English. Possibility to carry out part of the studies in other European countries is ensured by collaboration with other toxicology and/or environmental health programmes. Students apply either to General Toxicology or to Environmental Health arm of the programme. General toxicology Due to the lack of toxicologists and resources, numerous “old” and new chemicals as well as products of biotechnological industry, e.g. new types of drugs and functional foods are awaiting risk assessment. For this challenge, we offer a strong background in classical toxicology as well as in innovative approaches and development of new test systems. The students will have comprehensive understanding of all different aspects of toxicology including mechanistic basis of toxic reactions and diseases to be able to carry out chemical risk assessment. Environmental health In today's world humans are continuously exposed to numerous harmful environmental agents in air, water and food. The increased data about health outcomes provides basis for better risk assessment but, on the other hand decisions concerning risk management often need to be done when only incomplete and uncertain data are available. The students will have comprehensive understanding of human exposure to and health effects of environmental agents such as air pollutants, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, environmental chemicals and noise, as well as methods needed to produce meaningful risk assessments from such information. The next application round for international students starts in December, 2010! Admission requirements Students eligible to apply should have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. Necessary background includes fundamentals in human anatomy and physiology, mathematics, physics and chemistry and also a basic course of 4-10 credits in toxicology/pharmacology.
