Since 1981 the Computing Centre of the University of Kuopio participated in a joint effort to develop applications and informations systems for hospitals. The other partners in this effort were originally:
M Technology was chosen as the basis for programming and database. The FileManager data base management system, created by the U.S. Veterans Administration (currently Department of Veterans Affairs), was also adopted early. This package was later complemented with other Kernel tools.
The Computing Centre participated first in the development of systems for patient administration, laboratory and radiology departments, and of some data communication applications. Later the Computing Centre concentrated more on technical coordination, development of tools for systems developers and especially on cooperation with VA and on the adaptation and translation of the new software released by VA.
During the 1980s many other hospitals in Finland adopted applications developed by the MUSTI Consortium. The development work, excluding the definition phase, was, however, gradually and in the 1990s almost completely moved from the MUSTI hospitals to the vendors, software houses active in Finland in this area.
The Computing Centre has also been active to transfer the M Technology and applications to new environments like Unix, PCs, PC networks as well as client/server environments.
