Healthcare Information Systems Research and Development Unit

The HIS R&D Unit conducts research in healthcare information systems and develops tools and methods for software companies. The unit also provides support for software development and training related to its research fields.

The HIS R&D Unit works in close collaboration with related research units and groups, hospital districts, municipalities, software companies, standardization organizations and other actors within its field, nationally and internationally. Together with its partners, the unit aims at developing a world-class national centre of expertise in information systems in welfare services within the IT Education and Research Centre in Kuopio, Centek.

Commercial services and research projects

Commercial services for software development

  • Kernel and FileMan: Applications development and run-time environment for M-based information systems, localized to Finland.
  • FixIT: Rapid application development toolkits for FileMan/Kernel-based systems.
  • Musti support: Opening up M/FileMan/Kernel-based applications for industry standard solutions.

    Research in Software Engineering

    Current research is mostly part of the Finnwell program funded by the National Technology Agency TEKES, together with a group of companies and hospital districts in Finland.
    • AVOINTA: Open integration testing environment -project aims to agree on common methods and practices to test system integration, interfaces and their conformance with specification in Health Information systems.

    • Export HIS: The project studies the feasibility of exporting existing Healthcare Information Systems know-how and software products. The first target area is Shanghai.

    • SerAPI: is a research and development project, which focuses on the utilisation of Service-oriented architecture and Web Service technologies for information system and application integration needs in healthcare.

    Research in Information Systems

    • ActAD: Activity Analysis and Development methodology.

    • Indehela: Informatics Development for Health in Africa.

    • ZipIT: project develops the activity-based method for requirement specification. The method is going to provide instruments for simultaneous development of work activity and information systems.

  • The HIS R&D Unit provides research-based training as a commercial service.
