DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Retinopathy is the name given to 'disease of the retina' due to diabetes.

OPHTHALMOLOGICAL CHANGES IN DIABETES

 
* the prevalence of diabetes is 1.5-3% in the population
  (there are about 250 000 diabetic patients in Finland!)
u* diabetic retinopathy is the most important cause for
   blindness of 15 to 65 year old people in western
   countries 
u* GP or diabetologist is responsible about the screening
   of diabetic retinopathy

No abnormalities

 

No apparent retinopathy
Microaneurysms only

 

Mild nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy
More than just microaneurysms but less than severe nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy

 

Moderate nonprolifeartive diabetic retinopathy
Any of the following:
* more than 20 intraretinal haemorrhages in each of 4
   quadrants
* definite venous beading in 2+ quadrants
* prominent intraretinal microvascular abnormalities in
   1+ quadrants
* AND NO signs of proliferative retinopathy

 


Severe nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy
One or more of the following:
* neovascularization
* vitreous/ preretinal haemorrhage

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
