Cataract is a gradually developing opacity of the lens. Cataract is most commonly caused by ageing but many other factors can be involved: trauma, drugs, systemic diseases, ocular diseases and so on. Cataract usually develops in both eyes, but traumatic cataract may be unilateral. When cataract has progressed enough to seriously impair patient's vision and to affect patient's daily life, it will be treated by surgical removal of the lens (phacoemulsification) and implantation of an intraocular lens, IOL (Phaco + IOL).
