Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease affecting macular area. AMD can cause a central scotoma and make it difficult to recognize faces, to read, to drive, and to perform other everyday activities. Risk factors include ageing, smoking, positive family history of AMD, low anti-oxidant intake and AMD in the other eye. AMD appears in two different patterns: atrophic, "dry" and exudative, "wet". Exudative AMD can be treated with laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy or intravitreal drug-injections.
