Ethical Guidelines for Teaching and Studying
The purpose of the university is to provide teaching based on research and to
promote education and wellbeing in society. The university aims at supporting
its students in growing into independent, critical and open-minded, active
citizens. In order to achieve this goal, the university works for creating a
good studying and working environment for its students, teachers, researchers
and other staff members.
Individual commitment is the basis of following the ethical guidelines.
Therefore, the ethical guidelines for students and teachers are written in the
first person singular form. The aim is to create an atmosphere of trust,
equality and co-operation in which it is comfortable for everyone to work and
study.
The ethical guidelines form an essential part of the guidance system of the
university. Their purpose is to contribute to the wellbeing of all the students
and staff members of the university.
Our university states that its staff and students are to absorb and follow the
values and principles of high public service and professionalism ethics and the
principles of good scientific practice (Strategy
of the University of Kuopio 2007-2015). As far as research ethics is
concerned, our university obeys the regulations by National Advisory Board on
Research Ethics "Good
scientific practice and handling misconduct and fraud in science" (2002). In
addition, the Rector has, on the proposition of Council for Assessment and
Development of Teaching (ARVIKE), approved the ethical guidelines concerning
teaching (23.10.2007) which both the staff and the students commit themselves to
follow.

Instructions for Deterring Plagiarism and Measures to Be Taken in Case of
Allegend Plagiarism
Luckily the serious fraud at our University has been quite rare so far. However,
cases of fraud in different forms have increased in higher education
institutions in Finland. Especially the use of internet has resulted to increase
in cases of plagiarism in theses and cheating in exams in all fields of study.
At its most simple form, fraud is copying assignments or presentations but a
skilled plagiarist can acquire/obtain the correct answers for an exam or even
copy a foreign language thesis on the internet.
