The ultimate goal is a domestication of selected Northern berries (Vaccinium, Sorbus, Rubus), particularly cloudberry. Partners proceed with complementary studies independent on local climate.
Norway: planting machinery development
Finland: restoration of used peatlands
Scotland/Russia: analysis and effect studies of bioactive components
Parallel cultivation studies are done with selected cloudberries adapted to each climate: Finnish hermaphroditic clones and Norwegian cultivars. The success of the commercialisation depends greatly on the image of the berries.
For an increasing number of people, health image has become an important criterion in the choice of food. The project approaches this by developing indicators for the beneficial effects of the berries.
