| | | | The 5th Kuopio Stroke Symposium (June 16-18, 2010, Kuopio, Finland) is in new address www.uef.fi/stroke ! The Universities of Joensuu and Kuopio have merged to constitute the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) starting 2010 - see in web: www.uef.fi
With its approximately 13 000 students and 3000 members of staff, UEF is one of the largest universities in Finland.
Also neurology's web pages will move to new UEF address in the beginning of 2010 - you will then be redicted to new pages from this address.

| | | IntroductionThe Department of Neurology is a research center with experience in basic and clinical neurosciences. Researchers and staff are totaling 60.
The research groups in Canthia Building focus on basic mechanisms, prevention, drug and clinical research of degenerative brain diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease, stroke and epilepsy.
Most population-based surveys and drug trials are run at the Brain Research Unit in Clinical Research Centre. There are also facilities for genetics and biomarker analysis for searching new risk genes using single nucleotide polymorphism analysis and functional studies. | | |
High level of knowledge creates resultsSince 1990, our PhD students have produced 94 doctoral dissertations. Annually, we produce 50-60 publications in international scientific journals. We are part of the drug development network at the Kuopio University campus. Developing neuroimaging techniques to understand pathogenesisWe have developed techniques to measure earliest changes in Alzheimer brains and provided evidence that epilepsy can be a progressive process leading to neuronal death. We are applying diffusion magnetic resonance imaging for early identification of the extent of the ischemia. With help of these advanced imaging techniques we can assess efficacy of new drugs in the future. Slowing down progression and delaying onset Currently, a major focus in drug research in Alzheimer's disease is directed at agents with the potential effect of decreasing ß-amyloid accumulation and/or promoting its clearance. One of the goals in Alzheimer research is to postpone the onset of the disease and start the therapy as early as possible.
We are partners:
| | | Biocenter Kuopio: "...aims at building up a multidisciplinary research network between different actors in the fields of molecular medicine and related drug research and biotechnology" | | | LipiDiDiet: "Therapeutic and preventive impact of nutritional lipids on neuronal and cognitive performance in aging, Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia" | | | Nordic Centre of Excellence: "... to try to understand what Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases have in common and if they can be prevented with new treatments" | | | PredictAD: "... research project aiming at developing a standardised and objective solution that would enable an earlier diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, improved monitoring of treatment efficacy and enhanced cost-effectiveness of diagnostic protocols" |
