Undergraduate studies

Licentiate in Medicine

The whole curriculum of medical studies at the University of Kuopio is in Finnish. To be able to study medicine at the University of Kuopio (Finland) you have to be able to speak, write and understand Finnish language more or less fluently.

Unfortunately the Finnish courses for foreigners in the Kuopio University are available only for those who admitted to pursue a degree in the university. Before applying to the University of Kuopio, find out if there are Finnish courses available at your home university. Finnish language and culture is taught in almost 100 universities in 30 countries around the world. For more information about this go to http://finland.cimo.fi/ →Studying Finnish →Universities abroad.

If you wish to apply for medical studies at the University of Kuopio you must take an entrance examination. There is an entrance examination once a year (at the end of May) and it is in Finnish only. The entrance examination is the only way to start medical studies in Finland. There is only one entrance examination for all the courses taught in the medical school.

If you wish to apply, please ask for a prospectus and application form (both in FINNISH ONLY) from:

Courses and programmes in Public Health

See the following link International Public Health Training.

Exchange students in medicine

The Faculty of Medicine arranges a few clical medicine courses in English during each semester. The courses are open to foreign medical students who take part in the organised student exchange programmes, for example Erasmus and Nordplus, or those coming to Kuopio through the bilateral agreements between the University of Kuopio and a foreign university. Nearly all courses offered consist of clinical teaching both in theory and in practice. Students may choose courses according to their interest.

The course programme for the academic year 2009-2010

An exchange student may also choose to take a practical training / clinical placement period besides his or her theory courses. The exchange student can also apply to do just the practical training / clinical placement in the local hospital. Please note that it is important that student has had the theory lessons of that speciality he or she is applying for as an clinical placement (practice).

NB! All foreign medical students who wish to have a practical training (clinical placement) at the Kuopio University Hospital are taken only through the official exchange programmes organized by the university. Therefore all exchange students need to apply to the university even if they are planning to do only the practical training / clinical placement e.g. Erasmus training/ Erasmus placement.

The exchange period (theoretical courses or clinical placements or combination of those) ought to last minimum 3 months. The minimum length of stay in each clinical unit is one month. If some specialities or subjects are obligatory for you to have, please mention that in your application. If we have a lot of students at the same time the changes of the program might be difficult to do afterwards.

Please see more information about the practical training / clinical placements also from here.

Our official application form (both courses and clinical training) is available at http://www.uku.fi/intl/english/prospective/applying.shtml.

    - full academic year (Sept-May)
  • 30th of September
    - for spring semester (Jan-May)

NB! For medical students the primary deadline is 30 April. In the case that there are places on the courses and/or in the clinical areas left, applications can be considered in autumn too.

NB! Please note that June, July and August are holiday months and it is not possible to begin the exchange period or practical training (clinical placement) during these months.

Please remember to enclose your Transcript of Academic Records including the names of the individual courses in the application. Transcript of records is an official document issued by your home university. It contains courses and grades of your university education. If your home university does not automatically issue transcripts, you can use the European Commission´s standard form. This form can be printed at http://www.uku.fi/intl/english/prospective/forms/ECTStranscriptofrecords.doc

Postgraduate studies

Specialist training

Medical doctors who wish to do a professional post graduate degree (specialisation) should have a good command of Finnish in order to be able to communicate with the patients. Furthermore the doctors coming from outside European Union have to pass a series of examinations, prove their competence in Finnish language skills and do some practice under the guidance of an other doctor to gain the licence to practice medicine in Finland. The sufficient command of Finnish language, passing the necessary examinations and guided practice are the prerequisities for the specialist training (a professional postgraduate degree)in Finland. The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) is the board that has the exact information about these issues, and who gives the certificate. For more information you should contact officers of this institution (The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health, Valvira, http://www.valvira.fi/en/).

Scientific postgraduate studies

There is also a possibility to do a scientific postgraduate studies if you are aiming at a doctoral thesis (Doctor in Medicine, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Health Sciences). First of all, you should contact the research group of your interest. You can find some research groups of our university by examining our home pages (www.uku.fi, http://www.uku.fi/english/departments) or through the contacts of your own professors. Please note that this option only provides the opprtunity for totally scientific work and gives no right for practising medicine in Finland.

BEFORE YOU APPLY you should already have

  • a written research plan
  • a supervisor for your research at the University of Kuopio
  • a financial plan for covering the costs of your research period.

Your application will not be processed unless you fulfill these requirements!

For more information go to the web pages of the Faculty of Medicine http://www.uku.fi/laake/english/forms.shtml

The university does not usually provide the students with scholarships. Depending on the scientific competence and further success in their studies, some scholarships might be available later. Normally the scholarships have to be applied from other sources.
