WWW search engines

Search engines are based on web crawler robots, which trawl through the Internet and collect resources. These resources are indexed in databases. The databases are built automatically without human intervention, so the quality of search engines varies a lot.

Because of the large amount of resources on the Internet, no single search engine can locate all the information available, so it is worth trying several search engines. The search engines work best when you search for well-defined, specific  information.

* Finnish search engines

* International search engines

    Specialized search engines
  • ChemFinder (chemical facts)
  • CompletePlanet (over 70 000 searchable databases and specialty search engines)
  • Dogpile (search using several search engines simultaneously)
  • Google Groups (search newsgroups)
  • Ixquick (search using several search engines simultaneously)
  • Netcraft (search web by domain names)
  • Northern Light (search and content integration solutions for enterprises and individuals)
  • Search Engine Colossus (links to thousands of search engines in several countries)
