The Nelli portal
The Nelli portal allows you to search many different
databases through one easy to use web interface. You may
search one database at a time or several databases
simultaneously. Electronic journals and e-books are also
available on Nelli. You can easily create a list of your
favourite databases and searches on Nelli's My Space.
Nelli enables access to all the academic high quality
electronic resources which Kuopio University Library
subscribes to. There are about 120 databases, electronic
books and dictionaries as well as about 14500 electronic
journals on Nelli. Nelli also contains freely accessible
academic resources, such as the PubMed database.
All Finnish universities have their own Nelli portals,
the resources on them being specific to each university and
for the exclusive use of staff and students of that
university. So if you are on the staff of or a student at
the University of Kuopio, you cannot access resources
available on the University of Oulu Nelli portal, and vice
versa. Persons outside Finnish universities may use Nelli,
but they can search freely accessible resources only.

Main functions
QuickSearch
You may search preselected resources grouped by subject.
Please note that these resource groups do not contain all
the resources available on Nelli. More resources are
available in the Find Database and MetaSearch functions.
Find Database
You can select relevant databases and other resources by
title and by subject category, for example. Click the
"magnifying glass" icon on the Database List, Actions
column, to search a database through Nelli. Please note that
not all databases are searchable this way. These databases
may be searched using their own search forms, which are
accessed by clicking the database names.
Find e-Journal
You may find academic e-journals by browsing, by title of
journal, by subject categories, or by ISSN number.
MetaSearch
You may search several databases (6 at most) simultaneously.
Please note that not all databases are searchable this way.
These databases may be searched using their own search
forms, which are accessed by clicking the database names.
My Space
After logging in to Nelli, you may create a list of your
favourite resources and e-journals on My Space. You may also
save your search queries (History) and search results
(eShelf). Search queries may also be saved as Alert. The
Alert query is executed automatically at regular intervals;
you can choose the execution interval. Nelli sends you an
e-mail when new references are found.
Nelli search forms
Search forms are used in Quick Search, Database List, and
MetaSearch. All the forms are identical and have two search
methods, Simple and Advanced. You can enter a
single keyword or several keywords separated by spaces. If
you entered several keywords, they all are present in search
result (combined with Boolean "and" by default). If you want
your keywords to be searched as a phrase, put quotation
marks in the beginning and in the end of your phrase. It is possible to truncate a keyword using a
question mark. For example, pharma? searches for all words
beginning with the stem pharma. Advanced search lets you
combine two keywords with the Boolean operators And,
Or, or Without. The operator And
forces both keywords to appear in the search
result. The operator Or requires that either first or
second keyword or both keywords are present in the search
result. The operator Without removes the second
keyword from the result.
Linking from search results to full text
Your Nelli search results are literature references in
most cases. Please click SFX links
in references to check availability of corresponding
complete publications.
Exiting Nelli
Click "Log out" or "End Session" on the Nelli top banner, then shut down your
web browser if you used a publicly accessible computer, such
as in a library for example.
