Finnish as a Second Language
General information
Survival Finnish is recommended for short-term exchange students and
others who only need to learn some basic Finnish for everyday situations. If you
intend to continue your studies after the beginners’ level, you should start
with Finnish 1.
Finnish studies consist of five general courses and three advanced courses
focusing on different language skills. Courses Finnish 1 - 4 form the
core of Finnish studies: after completing these courses you will be familiar
with the basic structure of the Finnish language. Finnish 1 and Finnish 2 are
elementary courses where you will learn the basics. Finnish 3 and Finnish 4 are
intermediate courses taking you further into the material covered in the
elementary course and giving you many skills needed in your studies and work.
Finnish 5 is an advanced course. These courses comprise 24 points (24 ECTS
units) in total.
The advanced courses focus on various language skills (Academic Reading &
Vocabulary, Communication Skills and Academic Writing). You
can attend them parallel to Finnish 4 or after completing this course.
