University of Kuopio is a 'health university' with strong emphasis on medical, pharmaceutical, natural and environmental sciences. Also, the research and education of the  Chemistry unit are directed toward problems of biological, pharmaceutical and medical interest, with a special emphasis on synthetic and structural chemistry.

At the beginning of the year 2007 the Department of Biosciences was founded when Department of Chemistry merged with the Department of Biochemistry and Institute of Applied Biotechnology. The Chemistry unit is also closely related to the Department of  Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

The total staff of the Chemistry unit  has grown up fast during the last years and is now ca. 30 persons, including two professors.

The Chemistry unit started a new undergraduate program in biological chemistry, as  part of the biochemistry undergraduate program, so that the first students were recruited in 1999. The program includes also the pharmaceutical synthetic chemistry program between the Department of Biosciences and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

In addition, the chemistry unit responsible for chemistry courses intended for students of natural and environmental sciences.
