Credits
A reform
of the degree structure, relating to the ‘Bologna process’, became effective on
1 August 2005. As a result of this reform higher education institutions in
Finland adopted a new credit system, European Credit Transfer and Accumulation
system (ECTS).
One year
of fulltime studies requires about 1600 hours of work and corresponds to 60
credits (30 credits per semester). Lectures, exercises, seminars, independent
studies as well as examinations have been included in this estimate of required
working load of a student.
The scope
of the degree programmes is given in credits (opintopiste). Scope of the first
degree, Bachelor's, is 180 credits. The minimum extent of a Master’s degree
programme is usually 120 credits. The average time needed for the completion of
the Master's degree (300 credits) is 5 - 6 years
