Upon arrival
On this page you will find information about the official matters that you
should take care of after your arrival in Kuopio.
Registration at the University
It is
necessary to register at the University before attending any courses. Registration
procedure depends on the student's category and the year of studies. Please see
the detailed instructions for each case below.
Exchange students
Where: Registration takes place at the
International Office.
When: Although there are no registration
deadlines for exchange
students, please visit the International Office within a few days after
your arrival in Kuopio.
Fees: There are no obligatory
fees for exchange students. Exchange
students may join the Student Union but it is not compulsory for the
to pay the membership fee.
Undergraduate students (seeking for a Bachelor's or Master's degree)
Where: Undergraduate students register at the
Student Affairs Office
When: By 15th September annually
Fees:
Students are
required to pay the Student Union membership fee no
than 15 September annually. It is not possible register before this
fee has been paid.
Students who fail to register by the set deadline will be
charged overdue / re- registration payment of
EUR 35,
in addition to the membership fee.

Postgraduate students
(seeking for a Licentiate's or Doctoral degree)
Where: Postgraduate students register at
Student Affairs Office.
Registration can be done

e-mail or by visiting in person
When:
From 1st August to 15th September 2009
Fees:
Registration does not involve any
obligatory fees. Postgraduate students
can join the Studen Union by paying the Student Union membership fee EUR 58

Formalities
There are certain formalities you should take care of after your arrival
in Finland. Please see the list below:
1) Registration at the local police station
All
international students should visit the local police station for registration
shortly after their arrival in Kuopio. The registration procedure depends on
your nationality.
-Students from EU/EEA
countries
Students from the
EU/EEA member states do not need to have a visa or residence permit but
they must
register their right to reside in Finland if their stay last longer
than 90 days. Registration is done at the
police station in Kuopio
Items to bring with you to
the police station:

certificate" (opiskelutodistus)
-this is a certificate of enrollment.

proof of
your funds or a scholarship to cover your expenses in Finland.

Socrates/Erasmus and Nordlys
students:
please ask for a certificate from your home university stating your exchange
period and the scholarship you have received

degree
students and freemovers:
please be
prepared to prove how you are going to finally support your stay in Finland
(i.e. A letter from your parents, scholarship etc.)
- Students from
non-EU countries
Students coming from
outside the EU/EEA countries must apply for a residence permit at a Finnish
Embassy or Consulate in their home country
before arrival in Finland.
Non-EU students must also register at the local police station after their
arrival in Kuopio.

the police station:
2) Notification of move
As soon as you
arrive in Kuopio you must complete a
Notification
of change of address
form that you have received along with your Kuopas apartment keys. Please return
the form to your nearest post office or to the Kuopas housing office.
A notification of change of
address must be submitted within a week after arrival in Finland.
Please note that you must fill in
the registration form also when moving out of the country.

Registration at the local registry office
If you are
staying in Finland for at least one year, you should also register at the
local registry office. At
the local registry office you will need to fill in
the form "The Registration
Information on a Foreigner".
Items to bring with you to
the police station:

4. Bank account
If you want to open a bank account in
Finland, you should take your passport and a Study Certificate from the
University of Kuopio with you. Usually there are no fees for persons under age
of 26.
5. Student Union membership and student card
The purpose of the
Student Union of Kuopio is to promote the rights of both Finnish and
international students in the society. Student unions around Finland are always
working towards making the daily life of a student better. In addition to
negotiating better rights and benefits to students, the Student Union also
arranges a lot of social activities and events around campus and Kuopio
Exchange students studying in Finland for longer
than three months are welcome to join the Student Union but it is not compulsory
for them. If your study period at the University of Kuopio lasts less than three
months, you cannot unfortunately join the Student Union.
Under the student union act, all undergraduate degree
students (completing Bachelor's or Master's degree at the University of
Kuopio) are required to join the Student Union. For postgraduate students (Master's
degree completed) the Student Union membership is voluntary.
For postgraduate students (who have their Master's
degree completed) the Student Union membership is voluntary. They are entitled
only to the local discounts the Student Union has negotiated with some of the
local shops (Please see the details in KYY calender). The postgraduate students
are not enetitled to subsidesed meals, travel discounts or UTHS health services
etc.t
The Student Union
membership fee for the academic year 2009-2010 (autumn and spring term) is EUR
109 (EUR 59 for autumn term or EUR 50 for the spring term). Once you pay the Student Union membership fee you
can also get a
student card for EUR 15.
The Student Card entitles undergraduate students (who
have not yet completed the Master's degree) to a number of benefits such as:

subsidised lunches in student cafeterias

50 % discount in coaches and trains

health care services provided by the FSHC
-
a number of discounts in local shops
