General information
  • Neuroscience Training Program of Kuopio Doctoral Program of Medical Sciences and Graduate School of A.I. Virtanen Institute organize a Stereology Course, which is approved by the International Society of Stereology.
  • The focus of this course is on techniques and practical approaches in modern stereology and its applications in neuroscience. Since this is a methodological course, the techniques and approaches can be applied to other research fields as well.
  • In the beginning of the course, the limitations of traditional procedures, which led to the introduction of new approaches, will be discussed. Most of the time (>90%) will, however, be specifically devoted to understand the theory and practice of stereology and how it can be used to obtain reliable quantitative data from samples of the nervous system.
  • Lectures are followed by hands-on exercises on each topic to bring the theory to practice. To facilitate learning, overcome the fear of asking "stupid questions" in this theoretically complicated field, and increase interaction between students and faculty, this course will be run as an 'intensive course' style.

  • Bring sections from your own project

  • Bring a pocket calculator,  a pair of scissors, a sharp knife and a ruler (mm, cm) with you

  • We have computerized microscopes optimized for stereology

  • Bringing photographs or anything else would also be very helpful in the discussions between the participants and instructors on specific stereological problems related to participants’ own project
