Winter-time Emissions of Nitrous Oxide and Nitric Oxide in Boreal Soils:

The Effect of Environmental Factors and Microbiological Processes (WIENO) (2005-2008)

The project started in the autumn 2005 with the funding from the Academy of Finland. Field measurements are made in Maaninka (Agrifood Finland, North Savo research station) on mineral and mull soil and in Kannus (Finnish Forest Research Institute) on peat soil. The main goals are:

1. To determine nitrous oxide and nitric oxide emissions and environmental factors affecting the production of these gases in soil at low temperatures.

2. To study the effect of snow cover and soil temperature on N2O and NO emissions in winter. Simulation of changing climate.

3. To study the effect of repeated freezing and thawing cycles on N2O and NO emissions and properties of organic substrates in soil solution.

4. To study the mechanisms of N2O and NO production from soils at low temperatures with different moisture conditions using 15N label.
