Stem Cell Center

The present
and evolving stem cell research areas in Biocenter Kuopio Stem Cell Center are neurodegeneration, cardiovascular diseases, cartilage and bone repair, cancer
stem cells and development of hepatic cell lines from stem cells. Stem cells
from variable biological sources, such as bone marrow stromal cells, umbilical
cord and human embryonic stem cell lines, are used for research activities.
At present,
the Stem Cell Center operates mainly on preclinical applications. However, the
research performed in this network aims at development of novel therapeutic approches. A close collaboration with
National Virus Vector Laboratory of
Biocenter Kuopio will enable the investigations on genetically modified adult
stem cells. This research has also potential to elaborate new innovations and
products with remarkable marketing values.
