Core Facilities

One of the main aims of Biocenter Kuopio is to strenghten the infrastructure
and methodological services, thereby promoting the research activities of the
members.
In 2007, five core facilities were founded covering the areas of research
excellence in the center. These core facilities are:
- Genome Center of Eastern Finland
(Itä-Suomen genomikeskus)
- National Virus
Vector Laboratory
(Geeninsiirtokeskus)
- Biological Imaging Center
(Kuvantamiskeskus)
- Phenotyping Center
(Tautimallikeskus/Fenotyypityskeskus)
- Stem Cell Center
(Kantasolukeskus)
In 2008 - 2009 two more core facilities will be founded to further strenghten
the service range within the center. These new core facilities will be:
- Structural Biology Center (Rakennebiologian tutkimuskeskus)
- Bioinformatics Center (Bioinformatiikkakeskus)
By functioning via the core facilities, BCK aims at promoting the research
and development of chronic, non-communicable diseases, inclunding cancer, drug
development, gene therapy and diagnostics in collaboration with the local
enterprises.
