Neurobiology of Memory

The Neurobiology of Memory laboratory is interested in the neural mechanisms by which our daily experiences become stored as vivid memories that can be recalled later on when needed. We are also interested in the pathological processes that underlie memory disorders, especially Alzheimer's disease, which is one of the major challenges to our health care systems in modern Europe. Anatomically the research is focused on the hippocampus, a curious sea-horse like structure in the medial temporal lobe which plays a special role in so-called declarative memory. We apply several electrophysiological recording methods, immunohistology and behavioral testing, and combine these with manipulations at the molecular and neurotransmitter level to obtain an overall picture on neurobiology of memory formation from molecules to neural networks.
