| | AdministrationThe A. I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences (AIVI) has an administrational status similar to the other faculties of Kuopio University. The Institute is led by the Dean and the Vice Dean, currently Professor
Ari Hinkkanen and Professor Asla Pitkänen, respectively. The Governing Board is chaired by the Dean and, in addition to him, the Board includes four (4) professors, five (5) representatives from the other personnel, and two (2) postgraduate students, who are all elected for a period of three (3) years at a time. The research groups, 12 altogether, are divided into two (2) departments: the Department of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine (Director: Professor Ari Hinkkanen; Vice Director: Academy Professor Seppo Ylä-Herttuala) and the Department of Neurobiology (Director: Professor Heikki Tanila; Vice Director: Professor Michael Courtney). The Dean, the Vice Dean, and the Department Directors and Vice Directors form the Executive Committee that prepares such issues that eventually are under the decision making power of the Governing Board or the Dean. The Institute is self-committed to evaluation on a regular basis, and has an external Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). The general administration of the Institute is taken care by the Head of the Institute Administration, Docent Riitta Keinänen and altogether six (6) secretaries. Laboratory Chemist Pekka Alakuijala is responsible for managing the different laboratory services.
